While it offers a versatile removal option that can also provide card draw, there are potentially better removal spells available such as Murder or Hero's Downfall that offer a more straightforward removal without the life loss drawback. However, if the deck is built around synergies that benefit from sacrificing creatures or gaining life, Parting Thoughts could be a viable inclusion, but overall, it may not see widespread play in competitive decks.

If a creature has +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it, state-based actions remove the same number of each so that it has only one of those kinds of counters on it. There won’t be any counters of the other kind for Parting Thoughts to count.
