About Specter of Despair

Specter of Despair, Minion - undead, designed by James Ryman first released in Jun, 2026 in the set Escape from Violet Hold.

A minion like Specter of Despair (a 2‑mana Priest Undead with Taunt that can’t attack) would mainly fit into slow Control or Undead-synergy Priest decks that want to stall the board early, protect key combo pieces, or create sticky bodies for resurrection and corpse-based effects, since its value lies purely in soaking damage rather than applying pressure. However, purely defensive minions that can’t attack are often weak unless they have exceptional stats or synergy, and historically stronger alternatives exist—cards like Boneguard Lieutenant (which can trade and grow), Annoy-o-Tron (sticky Divine Shield Taunt), or even Doomsayer (which more effectively stalls aggressive decks) tend to provide more impactful board control. As a result, unless Specter of Despair has unusually high Health or strong Undead synergy, it would likely be a niche inclusion at best and probably wouldn’t see consistent competitive play compared to more proactive early-game options.
