A deck that focuses on generating spells outside of the initial deck, such as a spell-generating mage deck or a deck with cards like Mana Cyclone or Magic Trick, would benefit from using Open the Waygate. However, in the current meta, there are better cards for mage decks that provide more immediate value or win conditions, such as Mana Giant or Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron, making Open the Waygate less popular and not a top choice for competitive play.
