Counterspell, Instant, designed by Mark Poole first released in Aug, 1993 in the set Limited Edition Alpha and was printed exactly in 83 different ways. It see play in 4 formats: Commander, Pauper, Premodern and Duel Commander.
A control deck would benefit from including Counterspell in its strategy, as it provides a reliable way to counter opponent's spells and disrupt their game plan. While there are other counterspells with additional effects or lower mana costs, Counterspell's simplicity and efficiency make it a staple in many blue-based control decks. It should definitely see play in decks looking to maintain control of the game and counter key threats.
