However, a better alternative might be Hardened Scales, which creates additional +1/+1 counters, providing a more consistent way to protect against combat damage. Hindervines could see play in a deck that heavily relies on +1/+1 counters and needs additional protection, but its effectiveness may vary depending on the overall strategy of the deck.

Hindervines checks whether a creature has a +1/+1 counter on it at the moment it deals damage. It doesn’t matter whether a creature had a +1/+1 counter, or was even on the battlefield, when Hindervines resolved.
